bio

Séverine Assouline was born in 1976 and lives and works in Paris.

A multidisciplinary artist, her preferred mediums are ceramic and textile sculpture, as well as digital art.

She was invited to show her personal work as part of Science de l'art at Plateau de Saclay by Marc Williams Debono and at La Ralentie gallery by Isabelle Floch, as well as at Ateliers Babiole in Ivry for the i.CARE exhibition after her 2020 residency. In 2021, she was a resident artist at La Borne for Greenpatch Ceramics, focusing on human permaculture.

Her work has been shown in various group exhibitions, including LotolotolotophageLotolotolotophages and Il y a de Jours as part of “Traversées Africaines” in 2022 and 2024, and at Cas de Havre Exquis during MUE, at the former Pierre Cardin Museum. She has also worked with several municipalities on public art exhibitions, including Andresy, Fontenay, and Palaiseau.

approach

My practice explores the links between craftsmanship and new technologies, questioning our civilization and its relationship to otherness through the traces of mythologies and civilizations that have been erased or are in the process of being erased. As the granddaughter of textile artisans and a former digital entrepreneur, my approach has a deeply personal dimension.

By weaving a dialogue between tradition and modernity, my individual memory encounters a global vision. Because otherness is at the heart of my approach, I go beyond the boundaries of my own culture to build bridges between civilizations—past and present—and to seek common ground in a time of turmoil.

I started with ceramics, seeking to reconnect with a concrete materiality after working in the immateriality of the virtual world, often marked by physical distance from my interlocutors. Gradually, I experimented with other sculptural materials, but it was rope that caught my attention: its symbolic charge, oscillating between connection and constraint, resonates deeply with my reflections on otherness and human relationships. My work then expanded to hybrid installations, where these materials interact with contemporary technologies such as Blender or Arduino, as well as with video, to enrich my questioning of the interactions and tensions between the tangible and the digital.

At the same time, I practice psychoanalysis, which is also informed by reflections on otherness as the foundation of our human identity. How can we understand the other, this stranger within and outside ourselves? Simone de Beauvoir referred to women as absolute otherness: they were my first field of exploration. This work then extended to intimate otherness (gender, binary relationships), psychic otherness (the unconscious), and political otherness, tracing lines of tension and encounter between identity and difference.
